Mondays, for me, have always been days to look ahead. They are days where I plan out my week and think about all the things that need to be done. There is nothing wrong with planning your work and preparing for the next day. But what did you get done today?
I think we often spend so much time thinking about the past and the future that the day we are living gets away from us. I can spend so much time reading about yesterday's football games or worrying about yesterday's events that I get nothing done today. Likewise, I can spend so much time thinking about next week or the next day that nothing gets done today.
This is a real change from the world of scripture, I think. This last weekend was spent with lots of 9/11 memorials, as people think back to something that happened 10 years ago. I understand this, but wonder about it. A whole weekend to think about ten years ago?
We think about yesterday and tomorrow all the time. But scripture tells us to think about today. We are focus on our work, we are to love our neighbors, we are to serve our God. We cannot be worried today about next year's presidential election or the next Super Bowl or what Congress may or may not do next year. Sufficient unto the day is the trouble thereof.
Let's decide to make today mean something. Pray for our daily bread. Pray for God's help for others today. Do something today.
I am at work today. Let me make today a worthwhile day to be at work. Let me get something done that needs to be done today.
Let me redeem the time, today.
