Okay, this is one of those problems with which Calvin and Luther and Spurgeon and such never had to deal. What do I do with Facebook pages about Jesus or God?
There is the "official Jesus Daily" page (with 6,242,357 "likes"). There is just the plain "Jesus" page (with 1,037,282 "likes"). Or how about the "Merry Jesusmas" page? There is also a "God" page (with 806,825 "likes"). Is it important that more people like Jesus than like God? Of course, there are also three other "God" pages, with even smaller numbers of "likes."
Should I be a "fan" of one of the various Jesus sites? Or "like" them? If I don't, does it mean I am "not liking" Jesus? What about the Holy Spirit? His page has only 31,485 "likes."
Put simply, this is all nonsense.
There is no Jesus page, just pages put together by someone who thinks Jesus needs a page. Who knows what they believe? The Jesus Daily group doesn't even tell you what they believe, but they include all manner of weird pictures (their current profile picture makes Christ look like a Sith warrior from Star Wars). In a world where middle-aged white men in American can pretend (online) to be lesbian bloggers from Syria, why waste any time with make believe Facebook stuff about Jesus?
My answer? I will join none of them. I will "like" none of them. I will not be dragged into something about which I know nothing.
Do I "like" Jesus? What an absurd question. Having you noticed that scripture never sinks to this level at all? My duty and my joy in regard to Christ is to believe in Him, to obey Him, to serve Him, to fear Him, to love Him. I believe in His Word, not pictures and ideas posted on some Facebook page. I obey His commands, not the ideas of some Facebook sponsor. I serve Him in and through the church He established, not through posting on someone else's webpage. I fear Him enough to know that He is the eternal God, not a Facebook friend. I love Him enough to want to deal with Him, not with someone who purports to speak for Him.
You may "friend" some make believe Jesus on Facebook, but the real Jesus is in heaven, at the right hand of God. You may "like" a "Jesus page," but the real Jesus demands your heart and soul in worship and service. Facebook is for earthly friends, but we relate to God through His Word, through His Spirit, and through His Son.
God is not reading Facebook to find out if you love Him.
